ASUS Malaysia just made their ZenFone 5 officially available in Malaysia. This is a very capable phone with promising hardware. One thing you have to take note if you want to buy this phone is that the model we have in Malaysia has 2GB of RAM and is priced at RM599. Before this I have seen ZenFone 5 in the market with similar price but only with 1GB of RAM. So make sure you are careful with this and get the correct model as from my past experience, extra 1 GB of RAM makes a lot of difference in performance for Android phones.
ZenFone 5 like its siblings ZenFone 4 & 6 are all powered by Intel Atom processors. ZenFone 5 houses Intel Atom Z2560 processor clocking at 1.6GHz with Hyper Threading Technology. Along with 2GB of RAM the phone should perform well for most of the occasions. The phone has a 5″ 1280×720 IPS display so I would expect the phone to have nice and vivid colors with great viewing angle. It is covered by Gorilla Glass 3 too like its siblings and GloveTouch input is supported. The battery here has capacity of 2110mAh, which is pretty standard.
This phone supports dual sim dual stand by and 3G network up to HSDPA+. ASUS has announced a LTE version in Computex but there is no word whether it will arrive at Malaysia or not. GPS, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 are all present too.
This phone comes in 4 colors, namely red, white, gold and black. You can change the back cover with other colors too in the future if you have problem deciding which color to choose. It weighs only 145g which is quite standard for a 5″ phone. I love the design for ZenFone. Its simple yet far from being boring. The part I like the most is the bezel below the 3 front buttons. The concentric circle finishing typically found in ASUS ZenBook gives a very premium look to the budget friendly phone. ZenUI is a beautiful Android skin based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and ASUS promised that Android 4.4 Kit Kat is on the way.
It has a 8MP camera with Auto Focus, LED Flash and f/2.0 aperture. ASUS claims that the PixelMaster Low Light Mode can capture 400% brighter photo, which is great for people going out late at night. It has a 2MP front camera too.
I think ASUS has put up a good game in budget smartphone market with the ZenFone line up and personally I think that they are very appealing. Their designs are among the best out of its class and the performance are quite promising to with my little try with ASUS ZenFone 4. You can consider this phone if you have slightly lower budget and opting for a promising phone. It should do you a great job even at a low cost.
From the information I got, there are limited number of 1GB RAM ZenFone 5 in Malaysia and ASUS Malaysia has replaced them with 2GB RAM model “to meet end users’ requirement”. The price will be the same for both models so make sure you get the 2GB one for best experience of the phone. LTE version will land in Malaysia by the end of the year but no exact date can be confirmed currently.
