After the announcement of Windows Phone 8.1 and the launching of newer devices like the Lumia 930 and Lumia 630 months ago, we Lumia phones users can’t be more excited to get the Lumia Cyan update. While the newer devices come out of the box with Lumia Cyan update preloaded, the rest of the pack will have to wait to get the major update, which is finally rolling out starting today.

If you are not following the Windows Phone news, the Lumia Cyan update will consist of Windows Phone 8.1 update from Microsoft Windows Phone team along with some firmware updates and some tweaks done by Nokia/Microsoft Mobile. I had covered my impression for Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview on my Lumia 620 where I shared my thoughts on the new features included in the update. Among these updates are Cortana, Notification and Action Center, visual overhaul on the Start Screen and many, many more. . I strongly recommend you to read my post if you want to know more about Windows Phone 8.1 in detail.

While the changes made by Windows Phone team is significant, the story is less exciting for the Lumia-exclusive part. In Lumia Cyan, the most important part will be the firmware specific updates for each model. People like me who are using the Developer Preview can enjoy the sweetness of WP8.1 but the phone has been sluggish in performance and battery life. Model specific firmware updates should be able to improve in the mentioned parts.

There are also some new minor features to be brought to the users. Nokia Camera now has improved algorithms for Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930 with more features introduced. Creative Studio will be directly available from Camera Roll instead of being separated. Nokia Device Hub will help you to remember where you last used your accessories, so that you can find them easily. For those models with Here Drive, you will get Here Drive+ which can be used throughout the globe instead of your region only.

You can find more details on Lumia Cyan update here. The updates will be rolled out by region and by model. Newer devices should get the updates first. You can either check from your phone regularly (Settings>Systems> phone update>check for updates) or by visiting this page to see the status of the update from Microsoft. At the time of writing, a lot of regions including all models in Malaysia are showing “Under Testing” and they should be coming by next or the following week. So just stay calm and check for it everyday!

[Update] All Lumias have received this update. I have updated my Lumia 620 and the stability of the software has been improved. The lag is less noticeable and the battery life in standby seems to improve significantly.
