Microsoft’s latest Denim update introduces improvements for its Lumia lineup like the Lumia 930, Lumia Icon and Lumia 1520 to follow up with the previous Cyan update. As usual, the Denim update from Microsoft Mobile is for Lumia phones only and the update is built on top of the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1. More specifically, it introduces the Lumia Camera to replace the Nokia Camera and improvements to Cortana along with the new features introduced in Update 1 too such as Live Folders and Apps Corner.
Although the Lumia lineup is quite famous for its excellent camera, they were let down by the long waiting time that occurs when starting the app and snapping images. This update addresses this issue by increasing the speed of starting the app and picture to picture shots.
With this update, you know have an even better means of burning up your storage faster than ever. The Moment Capture allows you to create a 4K-quality video recording at 24 frames per second. That comes to 41.7 milliseconds to snap each photo. Each frame is made of a 8.3 megapixel image which allows every single video frame to be selected and saved as a still image. This can be considered a one up of the burst shot mode. I just hope there is an auto filter of blurry images as swiping through hundreds of frames to find the perfect shot does not seem like a good idea to me.
An interesting feature introduced in this update is the ability to capture 2 shots, one with flash and the other without. The camera app then allows you to manually adjust the brightness of the image taken with a slider. The theory kinda works like the paranoma shot, but anyone with experience using it will know that even some movements can ruin the entire process.
Rich Capture is also introduced to get the best of the camera without tinkering with any settings. It is designed to simplify picture-taking with auto HDR and Dynamic Flash and allows you to shoot first and edit and select the perfect shot later. For low light environments, this update has also improved the imaging algorithms.
“Hey Cortana!”. You’ll be hearing this phrase a lot now which sounds a bit more natural than “Ok Google”. Previously, starting Cortana on a Windows Phone is just a simple button press of the Search key. Now saying “Hey Cortana” will passively voice activate Cortana. This means that you can actually use Cortana without physically touching your phone, perfect for occasions where you need both hands to do something or drive. Cortana will also become location aware, as it will get geofencing capabilities for location-aware reminders. This just means that if you leave a certain location set by your reminder, it will trigger the alarm.
Nokia Glance Screen is also improved. Instead of showing time and notifications only, the Glance Screen can show more info like weather from Bing Weather, your activity stats with Bing Health & Fitness and also date.
The Denim update is scheduled to be in Q4 2014 so stay tuned. You can learn more about the Denim Update here.
