The new ASUS FonePad 7 FE171CG is here

ASUS has released a new iteration of its FonePad 7, the FE171CG. This comes as an improvement over the entry level FE170CG and if you missed the previous reviews, here are some links to guide you:

The new ASUS Fonepad 7 FE171CG is a 7-inch phablet with full 3G and dual-SIM phone functionality which supports up to HSPA+. Physically, it is thinner and lighter than its FE170CG counterpart with dimensions of 110.6 x 196 x 7.9mm and a weight of 280g. The thickness has been cut by almost a third which makes it quite slim and good for mobility. The height and width specifications remain the same. It still uses the same processor, the Intel Atom Multi-Core Z2520 (1.2 GHz) processor with HyperThreading. The FE171CG runs Android 4.4 Kit-Kat with ASUS’s Zen UI. Although there is no word on whether it is upgradable to Android Lollipop, it is highly unlikely to happen.

Currently there is only one class of storage which is the 16GB. Time will tell whether a lighter 8GB version will be released. There is an external microSD card support up to 64GB. ASUS is also offfering 5GB ASUS WebStorage free for life with an additional 11 GB for first year with the purchase of the FE171CG which is great for people who frequently use cloud storage. RAM is now improved to 2GB from the 1GB offered by the FE170CG which will be a good selling point as current standards prefer 2GB of RAM as the minimum. The battery received a slight boost up to 4000mAh, just 50mAh more than the FE170CG. The display is still the 7-inch, WSVGA (1024 x 600) (170 ppi) LED screen which can support up to 5-point multi-touch support and has an anti-fingerprint coating applied on it.

It has a rear 8MP camera which is a big improvement on the 2MP camera offered by the FE170CG and is the first ASUS phablet to feature the PixelMaster Low Light mode. It creates “beautiful photos in any situation” according to ASUS. Standard wireless and other features are present, such as the Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi 802.11b/g/n and GPS. The new phablet is available in Black, White, Gold and Red and has a recommended retail price of RM 529 with a 1 year local warranty (in Malaysia).
