While WiFi connections are getting more and more common these days, there are still places that can only provide reliable Internet connection over the Ethernet port. With poor or the total absence of WiFi signals, much of our mobile devices will be quite useless. Therefore, using a computer with a stable Internet connection as a WiFi hotspot is certainly a good idea. There are a lot of software which utilize the WiFi module present in the computer to share the connection. However, some of them can be quite unreliable or expensive. So here’s where the Xiaomi Portable WiFi plays its role.
So what does the Xiaomi Portable WiFi do?
The Xiaomi Portable WiFi’s main function is to provide you with reliable WiFi connection for your devices over a long period of time. It supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n standard and it works by sharing your computer’s LAN Ethernet connection by creating a WiFi access point using the hardware it has. It also works as a WiFi receiver so it serves a dual function. Although only one mode can be used at any time, it is still reasonable as we usually use our computers or handheld devices separately. If you have an old desktop without a WiFi card, this can be a cheap solution to get wireless Internet connection on it.
What’s in the Package?
In the package, there are the Xiaomi Portable WiFi with the cap, a strap and an instruction manual which is written in Chinese. The strap can be attached on the cap for the safekeeping of the device when unused. This is quite thoughtful of Xiaomi as the cap is really easily misplaced as it does not attach to the back of the Portable WiFi the way a pendrive cap does. It is recommended to attach or keep them in anything that doesn’t move a lot such as a box or anything that you take with you all the time like your keys.
At first glance the Xiaomi Portable WiFi looks like a pendrive. It has dimensions of 27mm x 17mm x 10mm, which is quite small considering what it can do. It is bigger than my Logitech Unifying Receiver for my mouse. Once attached into the USB port of my laptop, the body left outside is not that much, as shown in the picture. However, it is definitely too big to be kept there safely when I keep my laptop in its bag unlike the receiver for my mouse.
The Xiaomi Portable WiFi has a working WiFi adapter as well which can connect to other available WiFi signals as mentioned earlier. It is perfect for desktops but quite redundant on the laptop as most laptops have a built-in WiFi adapter. Usually, I just keep my built-in adapter turned off to save energy.
