In May, ASUS has made the Fonepad 7 (FE170CG) available in Malaysia and as its name suggests, is a hybrid of a phone and tablet. Although it seems to be quite late to discuss about this device, it is not actually so because of the recent huge price drop, which we will talk about it later. This suggests that now will be the correct time to have a reevaluation and review on this device.
This Fonepad is loaned to us by ASUS Malaysia and we would like to thank them for believing a young technology blog like us. It is our honor to be trusted by them.
What’s in the Box?
The box has a clean and nice look which rendered image of the Fonepad 7, the device name and the ASUS branding on top. The left hand side sports the Intel Inside logo as the device is powered by the Intel Atom processor. The right hand side shows the color options and the unit we have received is the black colored model.
Sometimes you are stuck with smaller screen device if you have limited budget and it is worse if you want both phones and tablet. ASUS has made Fonepad 7 available in Malaysia to answer your problem. So it is a phone or is it a tablet? Fonepad 7 is the combination of a small tablet and a phone with a surprisingly low price. The latest Fone Pad 7 is a 7″ phablet with dual-sim 3G telephony capability. The phablet is availabe in several colors and cost you only RM499 for the 4GB model (black only) and RM599 for the 8GB model (black, white, red & blue), not a bad deal considering you can get the touch of both smartphone and tablet world with one device.
Fonepad 7 is powered by Intel Atom Z2520 (1.2GHz) Processor with Hyper-Threading technology. Hyper-Threading, in a simplified manner, is a technology from Intel mainly found in PC to enable the operating system to perform parallel task in a processor core by duplicating some part of the processor. The system will treat the hyper-threading processor as an extra ‘usual’ processor so the performance will improve. It is packed with 1GB of RAM and 4GB or 8GB of internal storage, depending which variant you are interested. However, both models can support micro-SD expansion up to 64GB and you certainly need that given that the internal storage will not be enough for most people right now. The phablet has a 3950mAh battery that promises 10 hours of battery life.
