Last year’s Nexus 6 is definitely a great phone. However, its size is way too big for most of the people and its high price is not helping the case at all. We knew that it was destined to be a niche product right after it was announced. Nexus 4 for 2012, Nexus 5 for 2013, Nexus 6 for 2014, so Nexus 7 for 2015? Well, you know that is not going to happen as Nexus 7 is the tablet from Google. This year, Google announced a pair of Nexus phones, namely the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X. Can the two Nexus devices avoid the fate of the Nexus 6? I think the answer is yes.
There are many devices launched every year and it is impossible to keep track of all of them. Manufacturers are putting a whole lot of effort so that their devices would linger in our mind and not be forgotten. Some of them succeeded but even more of them went unnoticed in the crowd of all devices. It is time for us to do a recap of the technology world in 2014. Here are my unscientific 10 most notable devices in 2014 in my opinion. These devices might not even be the best in their category but in my opinion, these devices played their parts in improving the whole landscape and in changing how we see other devices.
HTC One M8
2013’s HTC One M7 received so much praise and everyone wondered how HTC was going to improve it. Luckily, HTC did not disappoint us at all. The HTC One M8 carried the DNA of its predecessor and improved at almost all parts. A faster processor, a bigger battery, a larger display, micro SD card support and improvement on the already impressive BoomSound speaker were included. The Duo camera where two cameras are placed on the back to capture depth information of the image might be a gimmick but it is the first of its kind.
Google has revealed the Nexus 6, their sixth iteration in the Nexus line up. Being the newest baby in the series, the Nexus 6 is definitely better than its predecessors. However, the baby is not small at all, literally. Sporting a 6″2K display, it is first phablet in the Nexus line up and the biggest Nexus ever. The internal hardware powering the device is also top of the line too.
The Nexus Brand
A lot of people might be unfamiliar with the Nexus brand. While the Nexus series is not overly popular among common consumers, partially due to the half-hearted marketing effort from Google, the series is the phone to get for a lot of power users and developers. For your information, it is a set of devices that are designed under Google and the Nexus phones showcases how Google defines Android and the direction the company wants to grow the platform. It will be some sort of “reference” for other OEMs in the coming year.
